The following informations are obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam at http://www.mofa.gov.vn/en/ct_lanhsu/ttpl/ns080313103738.
Exemption of VISA:
Nationals from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, or Thailand who have a valid passport and a return ticket do not need a visa to enter Vietnam for a stay of maximum 30 days.
Nationals from Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden who have a valid passport and a return ticket do not need a visa to enter Vietnam for a stay of maximum 15 days.
In most cases, Diplomatic or Official passport holders may not need a visa to enter Vietnam. The updated list of VISA

Vietnamese residents overseas can apply for the exemption of VISA to Vietnam as instructed @ http://mienthithucvk.mofa.gov.vn/en/Home/tabid/113/Default.aspx.
VISA requirements:
For those who are not qualified for VISA exemption, to enter Vietnam, it is required to have a VISA issued by the MOFA or Vietnam Embassies in advance. Please confirm the VISA requirement with the Vietnam embassy in your country http://www.vnembassy.net/.
There are various ways to get VISA to Vietnam:
1. Vietnam Embassy or Consulate abroad:
- Please contact the Vietnamese Embassies and Consulates in the country you are living. A list of the Vietnamese Embassies and Consulates can be found here http://www.vnembassy.net/.
- Necessary documents: Passport with at least 6 months’ validity; visa application form. Visa forms are available at the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your country. Some embassies provide softcopies at their websites (http://www.vnembassy.net/ - consular services).
- Fees: vary among different embassies.

You can also contact your local travel agent for the VISA application.
Important Note:
The process to apply for a VISA could be much faster if the applicant is supported by an official invitation from a party in Vietnam. For this purpose, the Vietnamese Academy of Science & Technology (VAST) could support the VISA application. The process will be as follows:

- VAST will inform you the acceptance number.

You could then bring the acceptance number to any Vietnam Embassy/Consulate
(http://www.vnembassy.net/) to apply for the VISA.
